Abstract

DBW 296 (Karan Aishwarya) is a new high yielding bread wheat variety developed by ICAR- Indian Institute of Wheat & Barley Research, Karnal. This variety was selected from a set of bread wheat lines evaluated in 23rd SAWYT (Semi-Arid Wheat Yield Trial) received in 2015 from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), Mexico. Parentage of this genotype is SOKOLL/3/PASTOR//HXL7573/2*BAU/4/MASSIV/PPR47.89C. This genotype was evaluated in NIVT-5A multilocation trial under AICRP wheat during 2018-19 as DBW296 and based upon significant superiority over the checks, it was promoted to Advanced Varietal Trial (AVT) under restricted irrigation timely sown (RI-TS) condition trials of North-Western Plains Zone (NWPZ). DBW296 showed significant yield superiority in AVT-I and AVT-II testing during 2019-20 and 2020-21, respectively. This variety was released and notified by the Central Sub-Committee on Crop Standard Notification and Release of Varieties for Agricultural Crops Govt. of India vide gazette notification number SO 8(E) of December 24, 2021 for commercial cultivation in NWPZ of India covering Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan (except Kota and Udaipur divisions), Western Uttar Pradesh (except Jhansi division), Parts of Jammu and Kashmir (Jammu and Kathua Distt.), Parts of Himachal Pradesh (Una Distt. and Paonta Valley) and Uttarakhand (Tarai region)..
