Abstract

Background: In the management of epilepsy, classic Anti-Epileptic Drugs(AEDs) has been observed to produce a significant effect than classic AEDs on cognition. Purpose of the Study: To compare the prevalence of cognitive impairment in patients with epilepsy receiving newer and classical AEDs. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional observational study, with the intention of studying point prevalence of adverse cognitive effect of antiepileptic treatment. The MMSE scale was used to assess the cognitive function. The data obtained were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 21 and Graph Pad Prism version 7.03. Result: It was found that patients on AEDs for more than 10 years and on poly-therapy were having the least MMSE scores implying more cognitive impairment. Among Various domains of MMSE assessed, it was found that orientation and language andvisuospatial skill were the significantly affected domains in patients receiving poly-therapy. Conclusion: Patients on poly-therapy with Classic AEDs had more cognitive impairment when compared to poly-therapy with Newer AEDs and combination of Classic AED and Newer AED.
