Abstract
The World Health Organization (WHO) officially confirmed COVID-19 as a viral pandemic caused via SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2). Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID- 19) is an extremely pathogenic and transmissible infection induced by a virus named SARS-CoV-2. SARS-CoV-2 is a single-stranded positive- sense ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus. Genomic analysis has shown that SARS-CoV-2 is phylogenetically analogous to SARS-like viruses. It primarily effects on both upper and lower respiratory tract system. Pneumonia is a typical feature of the SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals. Numerous therapeutic drugs are presently being used alone or in combination along with other drugs to overcome this disease. The purpose of this review is primarily to present an outline of the origin, classification, possible reservoirs and biological morphology of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It also outlines the emerging diagnostic and therapeutic treatment approaches for COVID-19.
