Abstract

Baby corns are small, immature, unfertilized cobs from normal-sized maize plants. It is now rapidly gaining popularity in domestic and foreign markets and has huge processing and export potential. The present study has shown that the baby corn variety SYG- 5414 is ready to harvest within 50 days under plains of Bihar, when sown in pre-rabi season (third week of September). Production of quality baby corn can be achieved between 1.29 to 1.73 t/ha. The average yield potential of cobs (husked baby corn) was found to be 9.30 t/ha. Baby corn variety SYG- 5414 recorded an average fodder yield of 62.5 t/ha. During the test, there was no incedence of disease, howevere attack of fall army worm was successfully managed at early stage of crop growth. The benefit-cost ratio of pre-rabi baby corn production was found to be 2.78:1 in the plains of Bihar. Valuable foreign exchange can be earned by export and canning.
