Abstract

Agriculture being the most important sector in the Indian economy, provides livelihood to more than two-thirds of the population. Sugarcane has been a significant contributor to the growth of Indian agriculture and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Sugarcane has an important role in the national economy, it provides raw material for more than 25 major industries including sugar, such as jaggery, khandsari, alcohol, paper, chemical, and animal feed production etc. To study the factors responsible/responsible for the production of sugarcane crop, a primary survey was conducted in Baghpat district of western Uttar Pradesh, as sugarcane crop has been dominating the farming system in this region for a long time. Sugarcane in this region Wheat cropping system mainly covers a large crop area. The farmers of the study area are giving more importance in growing specific crop rather than diversified crop. However, sugarcane farmers in the study area are also facing challenges like fair and remunerative price (FRP) and delay in payment of sugarcane by sugarcane mills.
